What is Notre-Dame Cathedral?
Notre-Dame de Paris is a medieval Catholic cathedral located on the Île de la Cité in the heart
of Paris. It is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture and has
stood for over 860 years.
When was Notre-Dame built?
Construction began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and was largely completed by 1260,
though modifications continued throughout the centuries.
02 Visiting & Access
What are the opening hours?
The cathedral is open year-round. Monday to Friday: 7:50 AM – 7:00 PM (closes
at 10:00 PM on Thursdays). Saturday & Sunday: 8:15 AM – 7:30 PM. Last entry is
30 minutes before closing.
Is admission free?
Yes! General admission to Notre-Dame Cathedral is free for all visitors. While you can visit
spontaneously, booking a time slot on the official platform is recommended for an optimal
experience and to avoid waiting.
How do I get to Notre-Dame?
The cathedral is located at 6 Parvis Notre-Dame – Pl. Jean-Paul II, 75004 Paris. By
Metro: Line 4 (Cité or Saint-Michel), Lines 1/11 (Hôtel de Ville), Lines 7/11/14
(Châtelet). By RER: Lines B/C (Saint-Michel – Notre-Dame). Entrance is through
the Portal of the Last Judgment on the forecourt.
Is Notre-Dame wheelchair accessible?
The ground floor is wheelchair accessible. However, the tower climb (387 steps) has no elevator
and is not accessible for visitors with mobility issues.
03 Tickets & Tours
Do I need to book in advance?
You are welcome to visit spontaneously. However, for an optimal experience and to avoid waiting,
booking a time slot on the dedicated platform is recommended. For guided tours, advance booking
is highly recommended.
How much does it cost to climb the towers?
Tower access typically costs €15 for adults. Entry is free for EU citizens under 26 and children
under 18.
04 Rules & Photography
Can I take photos inside?
Non-flash photography is permitted in most areas of the cathedral. However, photography poles
and tripods are prohibited. Please be respectful of the sacred atmosphere and other visitors.
Is there a dress code?
Yes, respectful clothing is required. Please cover shoulders, torso, stomach, and thighs.
Transparent or tight-fitting clothing is not permitted. Men are asked to remove hats, caps, or
bonnets indoors. Entry may be denied if these rules are not respected.
